According to The New Arab website, the decision by Norwegian academic centers was made after the Palestine Polytechnic University and Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences in Gaza signed a petition and asked Norwegian and other European universities to support the oppressed Palestinian nation.
The call for banning Israeli educational institutes is not a new effort, because some letters were sent to Norway in 2023.
On January 25, 2023, a Norwegian research journal released a list of Palestinian universities, which were attacked by the Israeli regime, as well as the names of students who were martyred by Israelis.
In recent weeks, Norwegian universities enhanced their support for the Palestinians and called for boycotting Israeli academic centers. Some universities in Norway also announced they will halt programs for exchanging know-how with Israeli institutes.
Some 939 researchers and university staff from Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland and Denmark issued a statement urging other academics to stand against Israeli attacks on Palestinians and suspend research and educational cooperation with Israeli academic centers.
The origin of the campaign has its roots in a movement by Palestinian university professor Muhammad Al-Tamimi in 2004. He expressed gratitude to universities that terminated academic contracts with Israeli centers.
